Curriculum: After School Programs
The Nantucket Lighthouse School Extended Day Program, 2:30 - 5:20 p.m., provides parents with an afternoon childcare option and children with a nice place to be. Afternoons include hands-on activities, artistic programs and imaginative play indoors and out. Older children have time to focus on homework with the support of the instructor. A guest instructor visits twice weekly to conduct special classes providing inspiration for projects and activities. These instructors include island artsts and craftspeople, musicians, performers and gardeners.
Extended Day Instructor
Lindsey Toft is an anthropologist, herbalist, gardener, and a scholar of the natural world. Beginning as a studio art major in New York City, she transitioned her focus to Cultural & Physical Anthropology, minoring in Russian Literature. Lindsey's curiosity in the humanities led her through a range of diverse experiences: from art galleries and printing presses, onto Human Rights organizations and hospital programs. She began working with primates to fulfill a childhood dream of, 'becoming Jane Goodall,' performing field research with wild monkeys in South Africa and then at a chimpanzee sanctuary in the Netherlands. She has worked on organic farms in Europe and Cape Cod and has recently taken up botanical folk medicine, making and selling herbal body care products. Lindsey substituted and volunteered last year with the Lighthouse School and she is very excited to be working with children in creative activities and play, while organizing guest instructors for Extended Day students.

Our Philosophy
At Lighthouse School, we imaginatively engage the whole child -- head, heart and hand -- in the creative and challenging act of learning. The Lighthouse School Extended Day program not only extends the school’s ability to provide quality programming for more Nantucket children; it is also an extension of the philosophy and creative approach of the Lighthouse School program.
- Small, often multi-age groups provide intimate and trusting settings and enable instructors to work and spend time with individual children.
- The social curriculum of Lighthouse School is actively utilized to teach valuable lessons in empathy, cooperation, and conflict resolution.
- The warm and inviting Lighthouse classrooms provide children with a comfortable and supportive environment and a lively extension of home. Older and younger children have opportunities to work and play together.
- The Extended Day program is simply structured to include hands-on activities, artistic projects and imaginative play indoors and out. Older children will also have built in time to focus on homework with the support of the instructor.
