Events & News: HoeDown!

Dear Lighthouse School Parents:

The 2010 Saturday night Nantucket Lighthouse School Hoedown fundraiser was a grand success with plenty of food, fun and friends to go around. The Hoedown was my first real experience watching a NLS event take shape. From beginning to conclusion, I observed several dedicated and experienced volunteers put together a memorable time by creating interesting tables of alluring silent auction items and the first ever “Giving Tree” followed by the live auction. The evening’s western ambiance blended nicely with the decorum of the Nantucket Yacht Club, and the food tasted every bit as good as a Texas barbeque on the range. Once everyone filled to the brim with buckets of ribs and chicken, lively square dancing  and “The Bull’s” foreboding presence challenged those of us who stayed to the end. Exhausted but content, I reflected on what made the entire evening a success.

No doubt, the success of the evening can be attributed to several people starting with Megan Maltbe, the event’s Chairperson. It took me only the first Hoedown meeting in early September to see Megan hard at work taking the lead and making sure the volunteers knew what their roles and responsibilities were and what was expected of them. Days before the event, Megan would be at school to assist and support her staff as they fulfilled their jobs. Allow me to personally thank Megan for her leadership in organizing this incredibly enjoyable event.

Also, I want to take this moment to thank those Hoedown Committee volunteers who made the event a top draw: Georgen Charnes, Gennifer Costanzo, Deena Gilbey, Susan Lazarus, David Lazarus, Jeanne McClure, Caren Oberg, Bethany Oliver, Bob Ruley, Georgie Sharman, Dina Warren, and Julie Wood. The NLS is very fortunate indeed to have such a hearty group of volunteers step forward to produce such a wonderfully received evening.

Finally, no event ever happens without the help of staff. A special thanks  goes to Cheryl Evans, Lorraine Milstead and Nancy Tobias for supporting the Hoedown Committee to make sure the event was carried out in keeping with the Nantucket Lighthouse School Mission, tradition and needs.

Best Regards,

Charlie
