Young children learn by observing and imitating the world around them. In play, they tirelessly recreate small worlds in which to work and discover the fundamental concepts and relationships that shape the world around them. A child at play reveals the way in which he will approach his life and work. In the Small School, we regard play as the true and most valuable work of children and strive to honor the spirit and genius of childhood.

The warm and inviting Small School classroom provides young children with a gentle transition as they take their first steps outside the circle of home and family. The school day is simply structured to include Circle Time, hands-on activities, artistic projects, imaginative play indoors and out, as well as Journal Time, field trips, baking, gardening, music and movement, Spanish, and All School activities. The language arts are celebrated through story reading and writing, play, discussion, and creative projects. Children actively explore number and mathematical concepts through practical tasks and games that involve counting, identifying, sorting, classifying, matching, comparing, patterning, and measuring.

The social curriculum is especially significant in the Small School. Children work to establish a balance between personal freedom and the needs of the community with the guidance of the teacher. Through meaningful interaction with others, a child discovers diverse points of view and is challenged to embrace a more comprehensive perception of the world. Children are taught to communicate their feelings and thoughts both honestly and respectfully. The daily work and play in a pre-school classroom present valuable lessons in problem solving, conflict resolution, and the language of negotiation.
