About Us: Middle School

Nantucket Lighthouse School Middle School newsletter, January 2012

Lizbet's class and Middle School students worked on various knitting projects, teaching and helping each other roll balls of wool, learn how to cast on and how to decrease stitches when making hats for babies at the hospital.

Ty and Cole chose to make a video for their "history of Algebra" research project!

Wetlands Study
This fall our wetland's study came to life when seining in the Salt Marsh at UMass Station. Fish, crabs, and shrimp were examined as we noted they were a vital part of the food chain in the marsh. Later, after a microscopic study of phytoplankton and zooplankton we discovered they were also a vital part of the marsh food chain.

Fire!
Learning how to survive in the woods was a fascination for all of us! Plenty of teamwork and energy went into trying to light a fire. Gerry, our teacher, was impressed when the girls were the first to start a fire by working together!

Atlantic Rising Project
Researchers from Atlantic Rising visited NLS on their 18 month journey around the Atlantic rim. Pairs of students analyzed not only the rising of the Atlantic Ocean, but also the effects it has directly on Nantucket. The researchers connected us through Skype to another island school similar to ours off the coast of Scotland. Read more about this project.

Turtle Science
Nantucket Sound, a northern reach for loggerhead turtles, produced this juvenile sea creature who washed up on shore this fall. Upon examination of the stomach by an local scientist at UMass Field Station, he reported this turtle had died instantaneously. Through an inquiry discussion, students surmised its cause of death.
