The 2018-2019 Series, commences on Monday, October 1 from 6-7:30PM, with author, educator and consultant Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair. A leading expert specializing in child development, education, family relationships, and workplace/family integration, Dr. Steiner-Adair speaks and consults on a wide range of topics, including social and emotional learning, nourishing healthy relationships in the digital age, and developing a thoughtful approach to technology in school and life. This workshop will be hosted at the Whaling Museum in collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association and sponsored by the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s ReMain Nantucket Fund. In addition to an evening community lecture, Dr. Steiner-Adair will be leading an afternoon workshop for island educators and administrators. This program will be held at Nantucket Lighthouse School, and it is open to educators from all island schools.
Cindy Horgan has participated in Nantucket Lighthouse School’s Educational Speaker Series for many years and will return on Thursday, November 8 and Wednesday, January 30 to talk about Raising Healthy Families. Cindy is the Executive Director of Cape Cod Children’s Place and a long-time early childhood educator, family consultant and parent of five adult children. Utilizing a strength-based model, she has led workshops on a variety of topics, including raising healthy boys, raising healthy girls, addressing challenging behaviors and understanding temperament. This year’s programs are hosted in partnership with the Nantucket Community School; both workshops will be held in the LGI Room at Nantucket High School from 6-7:30 PM.
Debby Irving, an emerging voice in the national racial justice community and author of Waking up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, will be joining us on Monday, March 11 from 6-7:30 PM. Combining her understanding of systemic racism, classroom teaching experience and work developing organizations, Irving seeks to create racial equity at both the personal and institutional level. The workshop will be hosted at the Whaling Museum in collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association and sponsored by the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s ReMain Nantucket Fund.
In April of 2019, the 2018-2019 Educational Speaker Series will end with award-winning author and illustrator Grace Lin. A New York Times bestselling author/illustrator, Lin won the Newbery Honor for Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and the Theodor Geisel Honor for Ling and Ting. Her most recent novel When the Sea Turned to Silver was a National Book Award Finalist. Lin is also a commentator for New England Public Radio, a reviewer for the New York Times, a video essayist for PBS NewsHour and speaker of the popular TEDx talk, “The Windows and Mirrors of Your Child’s Bookshelf.” In 2016, her art was displayed at the White House where Grace, herself, was recognized by President Obama’s office as a Champion of Change for Asian American and Pacific Islander Art and Storytelling. Lin’s workshop will be hosted at the Whaling Museum in collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association and sponsored by the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s Nantucket Fund.
